Saturn's new and admirable L-series models are getting most of the media and consumer attention these days, but it's worth pointing out that its big volume S-series has been considerably changed for the 2000 model year.

All trims of the sedan and wagon S-series models get new exterior and interior styles and various mechanical upgrades. The coupes were facelifted a couple of years ago, so it stays pretty much as-is for 2000.

There will also be a change in models available, since the base wagon, the SW1, has been dropped, leaving only the upscale SW2 trim. There'll be three trims on the sedan side -- SL, SL1 and SL2 -- and SC1 and SC2 coupes.

What's not changed is Saturn's method of sales -- no-dicker pricing in a congenial, low-impact dealer setting and a money-back guarantee.

The 2000 model will be noticeable from the outside because it will get new a new hood, fenders, fascias, doors, quarter panels, rockers, headlamps and taillights.

There will also be painted fascias on all models but the basic sedan, new 14-inch wheel covers on the SL1, new 15-inch wheel covers on the SL2 and SW2, and new optional alloy wheel covers on SL2, SW2 and the SC1.

To make the general driving impression better, Saturn has changed the anti-lock brakes so they no longer make noise or provide pedal feedback during activiation.
