Mazda and Nissan announced that they are expanding their original equipment manufacturing (OEM) projects. Starting this May, the former will share some of its ''Zoom-Zoom'' with Nissan as the latter will sell a rebadged Mazda5 in Japan.
Under the agreement, Mazda will supply a "clearly differentiated version" of the popular family hauler, which combines the size and driving dynamics of a car with the practicality of a minivan. Obviously, both companies aim to maximize profits resulting from increased production.
Excluding projected sales for the Japanese market, the Mazda5, which is currently available in about 60 countries, sold more than 885,000 units from March 1999 to December 2010.
The current agreement between the two allows them to share vehicle models. Mazda supplied the Bongo, which came to be sold as the Nissan Vanette, while Nissan provided Mazda with the AD and AD Expert, which took the Mazda Familia Van name.
