Just a few short hours before the Los Angeles Auto Show officially kicks off, and the Auto123.com team is already on site and poised for action. And there will be some action again this year, as Los Angeles has just become one of the big North American shows. Over 30 North American debuts and a few world premieres are on the menu, not to mention the surprises the organizers have in store for us.

Audi R8 Spyder

Among other things, we already know that Chevrolet will finally be unveiling what resembles most closely a production version of the Volt. The car has in fact made a notable appearance in the Los Angeles area over the weekend. And how can we forget the new Cruze and the Buick Regal! Also, the coupe variant of the Cadillac CTS will finally be presented to the public and will even be the subject of an in-depth analysis by one of my colleagues.

Among the other notable unveilings, we’ll get to feast our eyes on a Subaru STI Special Edition of which only 125 units will be produced. The Hybrid Tourer will also be making its North American debut.

The remodelled Porsche Boxster, the 2011 Ford Mustang and the redesigned Toyota Sienna are also joining the fray, as well as two surprises from Volkswagen.

Of the North American debuts, the most anticipated is without a doubt the Mazda2, finally featuring specs destined specifically for our market. The car will be hitting our roads next July.

The Audi R8 Spyder, E-tron concept, Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec, S400 Hybrid and SLS, Jaguar XJ and BMW Active Hybrid X5 and X6 will also be presented to the public for the very first time.

Major exotic car manufacturers such as Lamborghini and Ferrari are noticeably absent again this year, having chosen to forgo this show because of the high participation costs.

A Green Show
The Los Angeles Auto Show has earned the reputation of being the greenest show in North America. To maintain such a reputation, every year Los Angeles names its own Green Car of the Year. The Audi A3 TDI, Honda Insight, Mercury Milan Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Golf TDI are all contenders this time around.
