2000 Porsche 911 C4 - The Winding Road to Whistler
Whistler, BC features some of the best skiing in North America. With its myriad of superb restaurants, shops and five-star accommodation, it's become one of the must-go vacation spots in North America. And the skiing is even better! It may come as a surprise to those who haven't visited that the area boasts yet another attribute as enticing as its vast ski area. Golf? It's true the area lays claim to three world-class courses, but that wasn't the answer I was looking for. Often ones journey is as fulfilling as the outcome, and in the case of the serpentine Sea to Sky Highway that connects Whistler to Vancouver, the road to slalom heaven is paved nirvana indeed.
We packed light. The stowage is slight in the 911, although to put things in perspective a similar mid-engine Italian exotic might only have room for a lunch bag and a pair of woolies. Our reservations were set and the gas tank was full. My wife, Jennifer, and I were off on a romantic escapade. Great company, a prime destination and the perfect vehicle for snow covered roads - sounds like the perfect road trip.
The Porsche 911 C4 is an ergonomic tour de force compared to most any other exotic, it's familial forbearers included. Its particularly expensive scent of quality leather invigorates the senses while 'necessary' creature comforts abound, enough to make an earlier 911 blush in naked embarrassment. The front seats are extremely comfortable and supportive, although for extreme driving the optional - and pricey - sport seats should be on your list. Its driving position is ideal as well, placing you directly behind a race-inspired steering wheel and purposeful gauge package. The large tachometer takes center stage, eclipsed by other instrumentation of lesser import - such as the speedometer. All vents are large and appropriately placed (in many sports cars this in not the case) while the climate control system is totally automatic and relatively straightforward in operation.
